Achievements

Achievements

We are releasing 2.1.5 later today, which will include our new achievements system. To better prepare our players, we have compiled information about the new achievements system, including what you can expect now and moving forward. For starters you will be able to earn achievements on the current version of the app (2.1.4), even before updating to 2.1.5 later today, but won’t be able to see them until 2.1.5 releases. To begin our conversation about achievements, we’ve done away with the old achievements entirely.
Why? We’re glad you asked.

The first reason we removed Version 1 (V1) achievements is due to the technology WallaBee uses. The old achievement system needed to be overhauled for our new infrastructure, so it only made sense to completely overhaul it. We also don’t track all of the same data in V2 that we did in V1, so showing unachievable achievements for new players doesn’t make for a great experience. However, players will see some similar tasks to complete, with new updated artwork.

The second reason we removed V1 achievements is that they were created for a smaller audience/game in mind. Many of the achievements could be finished within one day (outside of the anniversary/birthday achievements). For example, the ‘Collector’ achievements required players to save 1, 25, and 100 items. This can be done now with a single visit to the Helicarrier, so there’s little to achieve with that badge line. Similarly, we no longer have Twitter and Facebook integration in V2, so the ‘Sharer’ achievements would be unachievable for new players, leaving a hole in their achievements page. Having a new series of achievements allows us to be methodical with when, how, and why we add new achievements in the future.

The third reason we removed V1 achievements is for an overall consistency moving forward with the gameplay and art style of WallaBee. As mentioned above, we’re looking at new data, which means that new types of achievements are available to earn. These new achievements can include how many items players have recycled and how many places, within certain place categories, you’ve interacted with. This allows us to continue adding new achievements based on gameplay you’re already doing as of V2. We also felt that the V1 achievements could use a pick-me-up with their visuals, which helped lead us to the new V2 achievements. You will find that the artwork compliments the overall theme of WallaBee, yet has a distinct style. This was done purposefully to make achievements stand out as their own without detracting from item artwork. Compliments of our very own, John Rogeles (JohnArt).

Achievements will be separated into various categories, including but not limited to, Honeycomb-related and Place-related achievements. Inside these categories, players will notice that challenges are separated into ‘Lifetime’ tasks, which are a running total of activities beginning May 1st, 2017, and ‘Daily’ tasks, which need to be completed within one day (based on UTC time). Lifetime achievements are denoted with a blue banner upon completion, while Daily achievements’ banners are green. Please note that Daily achievements are not repeatable – you can only earn that achievement once. It is not an achievement you must repeat daily, but simply an achievement that needs all requirements to be completed within a UTC day.

FAQ

Q: Will achievements be retroactive?
A: Some achievements will be retroactive to May 1st, 2017, the day V2 was released. We will be using the launch date of Version 2 for any retroactive achievements moving forward, as that was the day we released the new API to the public. This makes a more fair playing ground for all players in V2, as well as something new for legacy players to earn!

Q: I’m a legacy player from V1. Do I get to keep my V1 achievements?
A: The short answer is no. However, we will be introducing a Retro Bee achievement for all of our old-school players. It’s a special thank you for being with us since V1. If you would like a download of which achievements you earned in V1, we can sort that out via support.

Q: Where are my birthday/anniversary achievements?
A: They will be added at a later date. These are the only achievements that will be retroactive prior to May 1st, 2017.

Q: I performed the tasks necessary to earn an achievement, but my progress bar/achievement didn’t update.
A: Don’t worry, it will appear shortly. All tasks for achievements are cached, so once those are updated, the progress bar will update as well. This is the same for unlocking an achievement. It doesn’t happen immediately, but will happen within a few minutes.

Q: I unlocked an achievement, but never got notified.
A: We send push notifications when you earn an achievement, but you have to be out of the app to receive them. We will also be backfilling activity posts and inbox notifications once the majority of players have updated to 2.1.5 to avoid any unforeseen issues. So right after updating, you will not see any activity posts for completing achievements, but they will be there later this week.

Additional Updates

Item Releases

The great thing about WallaBee is that it’s played by users all around the world. The terrible thing about WallaBee is that drop times cannot be fair across the board. This fact has been reinforced recently in the last 10+ drops. After our app’s freakout on a weekend, WallaBee’s President decided it would be best to have item releases during WHQ office hours, just in case there was an issue. There was a ten-consecutive-item-releases-without-issues mandate put into place, beginning with the Latest Bot release. We have just recently successfully gotten past that number, so items will once again return to a more random release timeframe. Since we have had so many recent releases with a timeframe that favor’s USA and Europe, we have been trying to balance that scale a bit for our friends in other areas of the world (Hello, Down Under!) with the last two week’s item releases. We will continue to push forward with a more worldwide focus for drop times now that things are running smoother.

New BeeKeeper Set

A new set has appeared over the weekend: Joshua Tree. This is a BeeKeeper directed set, through the eyes of Cali49. As a California local, Cali49 has spent many hours traversing the desert wilderness that is Joshua Tree National Park. This six item set is based on his favorite landmarks and sights. Cali49 is getting this opportunity to co-direct a set based on last year’s BeeKeeper competition, where three BeeKeepers won the ability to co-direct a set with myself and Andy. Lightek’s ‘The Hunt’ was the first BeeKeeper set, which highlighted the 5th year birthday celebration in London, ‘Joshua Tree’ is the second BeeKeeper set, and a third is coming soon… We hope that you enjoy a trip through one of California’s National Parks with us.

Development

Updates for WallaBee have slowed down a bit to some changes internally, but we are back on track with fixing bugs and app improvements. One improvement that you can already see in the app deals with the Helicarrier and the WallaBee Museum. These two locations now automatically sort items by set. If you’re looking for items in the helicarrier, say, for a mix, you can now easily see what’s there for the taking. Similarly, the WallaBee Museum now displays Colin’s hard work in a coherent manner. Again, we would like to remind our players that the Museum is, of course, a museum… you can look, but no touchy. 😉

As mentioned above, 2.1.5 is rolling out later today. Players will receive push notifications for earning achievements, even without updating to 2.1.5, but will be unable to see their own achievements until they update. This new system allows us to push out new achievements in the future without needing additional app updates, so they can become more often (similar to items).

Hurricane Harvey Relief Sale (NOW ENDED)

As you may know, Southeast Texas was hit by a major hurricane late last week. Hurricane Harvey was a Category 4 hurricane when it made landfall north of Corpus Christi, Texas and has since moved north causing catastrophic damage in the Houston area. It has also caused flooding in Austin and San Antonio and is expected to affect Louisiana as well.

Many members of Team Munzee have family and friends, including members of the WallaBee community, who live in affected areas. This is a very worrisome time, and the impact of this disaster may have a global impact. We want to show that WallaBee and our community are here to support those in need.

Starting at 12:00 WHQ time TODAY (August 29th), Mixer Packs will be on sale with 100% of the proceeds being donated to relief for victims of Hurricane Harvey via American Red Cross. Mixer Packs will be discounted to $1.49 each, with each pack containing 10 mixers. These will be available until Thursday, August 31st at 23:59 WHQ time.

All of those people that have been affected are in our thoughts, and we want to help as much as possible.

Keep on Mixing!

WallaBee 2.1.4 Notes

WallaBee 2.1.4

Long time no see! There’s a new update in the App Store and Google Play Store: Update 2.1.4

This version of WallaBee contains various bug fixes and text changes.

  • Store Third Row – We made adjustments, but they didn’t fix the issue. Hopefully we will have a fix on the next app update. The third row in the store “should” now behave like normal. We believe that the issue causing it to lock up has been resolved, but only time will tell (edited 9/29).
  • Item Context Menu – When recycling an item, the view now automatically reverts back to your pouch view.
  • Messaging – ‘Done’ has now been updated to ‘Return’ to reflect the true purpose of that button.
  • Uniques Page – Gathering information on Uniques now directs players to the correct locations.
  • Selling an Item – The popup message has been modified to remove the bit about being automatically removed from the market after 7 days.
  • Predictive Text – Report Place and Add A Place now have predictive/autocorrecting text.
  • GPS not found – When logging out of one account and logging in with another, the places tab would report a ‘cannot find gps’ screen. This has been fixed.
  • Android layout adjustments.
  • Added Munzee HQ Place Icon.
  • Last step away from wallab.ee! We’re now completely on WallaBeeGame.com and WallaBeeBlog.com

WallaBee 2.1.3 Notes

WallaBee 2.1.3

We are back with a new update in the App Store and Google Play Store: Update 2.1.3.

This version update contains some general housekeeping and a cool new feature for our newer players: Tutorials.

Tutorials

In the Settings Page, you can now find a new selection called “Tutorials” (go figure). These tutorials were designed to highlight beginning gameplay features of WallaBee, so our newer users don’t feel left in the dark. We currently have tutorials broken into three main categories: Pouch screen, Places screen, and Stores screen. Each category has tutorials that cover basic gameplay for each section of the app. We hope that this addition will help our ‘NewBees’ find their way a little easier.

Other tutorial content will be added at a later date, including those under the Profile tab.

Players will also notice that the pesky Introduction can now be exited without having to spam-click the NEXT button.

Status Update

Status Update

Hello WallaBee Players,

It’s time for an update on what’s going on in the world of WallaBee Development. During the past few weeks, we have been making adjustments to the app, including bug fixes, a new tutorial system for players just starting, and a few surprises. While some of these changes have yet to go into effect, as they require an app update, there have been other changes on the backend that don’t require an app update. This is what we want to discuss with y’all today.

New Item Releases

There have been some issues with the app during the last few item releases. These have been spurred on by a few different areas of the app, but it’s mostly been the Activity page.

Q: Why is the Activity Page causing such an issue?

A: In short, we were passing too much information at once to the Activity Page. When a new item comes out, players want to see where the current number is, so that they can try and time their purchase to get a certain number card for themselves or their friends. So, when many players are requesting the same large bulk of information at the same time, the database locks up.

Q: What happens when the database locks up?

A:  Everything that WallaBee has in it comes from, and is saved to, a database. When the database becomes too stressed with gathering and saving information at the same time, it can lock up. When this happens, sometimes certain requests timeout and do not perform. Some examples of this is the lack of activity on an item when purchased from the store, the ability to purchase an item multiple times in one appearance, and the ability for two players to purchase the same item from the market at the same time.

Q: Okay, so what are you doing to fix it?

A: Right now, we are working on optimizing our API endpoints, which should speed up various areas of the app. We did some changes yesterday before the new item was released that made a certain high-traffic endpoint more efficient, but it didn’t resolve all the issues. In fact, it created new ones. We are continuously working on overcoming this obstacle for you, the WallaBee Community. We will not stop until this is resolved and functioning as it should.

Q: What can we do to help?

A: In order to properly test the current issues, there needs to be a lot of activity happening in the app at once… i.e. a new item release. Unfortunately, this is the only way we can really test whether or not our changes are fixing anything. Based on recent feedback and our desire to keep the integrity of the game, we will not be releasing a new set item until the current issues are resolved. Instead, we will be using our good old friend: Test Item.

Test Item

Test Item

For those who have not encountered the Test Item before, it is a special item that does not appear in your pouch. It was created strictly to help us simulate a drop (with your participation).

You may see the release of a Test Item or two at various times during MHQ hours (9am-5pm CDT) over the next few days. Some releases may be teased ahead of time to get more activity, while others will be a complete surprise. The Test Item will appear in WallaStore for only a few minutes at a time. We will take record of any performance issues/breakthroughs and those who participated, and then reset the items to zero. We would appreciate your cooperation during this time and will reward those who participate with purchasing a test item.

From the entire WallaBee Team, we would like to extend an apology for those who have experienced issues with the app, specifically during the adrenaline-pumping moments of a new item release. We want to thank those who have remained patient and optimistic during the past few weeks, as we know that is has been irritating and frustrating. We have been just as frustrated as you, if not more so – we just want it to work well.

Website Updates – 06/28/2017

Website Updates

Hello everyone!

Who likes updates? We do! In fact, Judy has updated the website to the newer version of React (15.5.4), which has allowed her to create a better user experience. With Mizak’s help porting over all of the behind-the-scenes tools, you will find that things run much smoother on the site. If you run into formatting issues with your browser, using a hard refresh will fix it (CMD+Shift+R or CTRL+Shift+R).

Layout Overhaul

You will find a brand new layout on most pages (which is a tad bit more mobile friendly), with an easy navigating menu on the top right. No more following certain rabbit holes to get where you need to go.

Side Menu

Personal Profiles

Profiles have gotten a nice overhaul, allowing logged in players the ability to see items in their pouch and their set (or lack there of).

Pouch Items

Set Items

We didn’t stop at viewing your own profile, though. Judy has updated how you can view another player’s profile, which displays information is a format that’s easier to read. To get to a user’s page, simply select ItemBee from the navigation menu and select the Profile Search tab.

Public Profile

Sets Page

Along with the layout, there are some added bits of information on the Sets Page. Players can now quickly see the total number of set completions, who it was designed by, and when the set was created.

Set Page

Judy and Mizak have both been working hard to bring the best web-based experience to our players, so what are you waiting for? Go check out the new site additions!

Shave and a Haircut

Two Bits!

Hello WallaBee Players!

We have a new set to share with you: Two Bits. Inspired by the silly knock that we all do when visiting a friend’s house, this set will take a look at what a ‘typical’ salon in WallaVille looks like. In fact, it’s the only salon in WallaVille. Be prepared for a new ‘do… or two.

Speaking of something new, this set is a great opportunity to release a new subcategory to the Services Places Category: Salon / Barber. Places with this new subcategory will begin popping up on the map over this next week, replacing most current hair salons. Players will soon be able to add new Salon / Barber locations from within the app. For those who are interested in the backend statistics, this new category has an accessible radius of 600m, with a max item count of 60, which follows in line with most of the Services category.

In other news, we hope that you enjoyed The Hunt. The idea for that set came to us from one of our players and BeeKeepers, Lightek. Last September, our BeeKeepers had an internal competition with adding new places. Their names were added to a raffle the more places they added, and there were many prizes to be had. Lightek was one of three winners of the ‘set co-producer’ reward, which means you can look forward to two other BeeKeeper-inspired sets later this year.

As always, have fun and #ForageOn.
